Urgent Plumbing Help in Hamilton

What to do in the first few minutes of a plumbing emergency, and how to reach Rossville Plumbing.

Water spraying from a split pipe, sewage rising through the basement floor drain, a water heater spreading a puddle across the floor: the first few minutes decide how much has to be dried out and replaced later. Shut the water off if you can, then call.

If you smell gas, leave the house first. Take everyone with you and do not switch anything on or off. Once outside, call the gas utility or 911. Plumbing waits until they say the house is safe.

How Urgent Is Your Plumbing Problem?

Answer yes or no for what is happening right now.

Is water spraying from a pipe or flooding a room?
Is sewage coming up through a drain, tub or toilet?
Is there no water at all from any faucet?
Do you smell gas anywhere in the house?
Is the water heater leaking?
Is it only a slow drip from a faucet, pipe or fitting?

Answer the questions above, then press Check.

While You Wait

Skip any step you cannot do safely, and stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or appliances.

  • Find and close the main water shutoff. In a basement it usually sits where the water line comes through the wall or floor, beside the meter. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or a lever a quarter turn across the pipe.
  • Switch off the water heater. Set a gas control to “Pilot” or “Off.” Switch an electric heater off at its breaker only if the panel is dry to reach.
  • Stop using the affected drains and fixtures. During a sewer backup, every flush and shower ends up at the lowest drain in the house.
  • Move belongings away from the water. Rugs, boxes and anything electrical come off the floor first.
  • Take photos of the leak, the fixture and any damage, and email them to nixon@rossville-plumbing.com.

When a Hard Freeze Reaches Hamilton’s Pipes

Southwest Ohio winters bring hard freezes, and the pipes that suffer are the ones near the cold: lines along outside walls, in crawl spaces and unheated garages, and the feed to an outdoor spigot. Many older houses in Rossville and German Village run supply pipe along stone foundation walls. A frozen pipe often leaks only once the ice melts, so keep the main shutoff within reach while it thaws.

A burst supply line in January is no fun. Ours let go under the kitchen sink on a Sunday morning and the plumber was here within a couple hours. Replaced both lines and the shutoff that wouldn't close all the way…

What Counts as an Emergency, and When Calls Are Answered

Calls are answered Mon–Fri 6:00 am – 11:30 pm and Sat–Sun 9:00 am – 8:30 pm. Outside those hours, shut off the water, stop using the affected fixtures and call when the line opens.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything that keeps doing damage while you wait: a pipe spraying, a ceiling dripping, sewage coming up through a drain, a water heater leaking steadily, or no water in a freeze. A running toilet, a dripping faucet or one slow drain can wait for a scheduled visit.

What should I do if the problem starts after calling hours?

Close the main shutoff, switch off the water heater if it is involved and stop using the drains. Then call when the line opens; a service request with photos can go in before then.

How soon can someone get to my house?

No arrival time is promised in advance. It depends on the problem and on the jobs already scheduled that day. Call and describe what is happening, and you will hear what the day allows.

Should I call a plumber or the gas utility if I smell gas?

The gas utility or 911, from outside the house, before anything else. Plumbing work, a gas water heater included, comes after they say the house is safe.

Shut the water off first, then call about what you found.
